Avicenna Group

The Avicenna Group is a U.S.-registered 501c3 non profit organization, formed in April, 2011 to support medical capacity building in post-Revolution Libya.  We work on both the grassroots and institutional levels.

In the area of institutional capacity-building, we have been working to facilitate long-term training partnerships and exchanges between several U.S. -based universities and teaching hospitals, and counterparts in Libya.  At the local/grassroots level, we have been supporting smaller Libyan organizations build organizational capacity, find research partners, technical support and bridge funding.  The Avicenna Group has provided small grants and loan guarantees to fund a national family violence hotline, and a national health maintenance campaign.

In Libya, our main partners in 2011-2012 have been the 1200-bed Benghazi Medical Center (BMC), the Libyan Diabetes and Endocrinology Association, and half a dozen local NGOs.  The Avicenna Group is registered with the Libyan Ministry of Health and the UN, and has been vetted by GlobalGiving.org, a leading nonprofit fundraising organization.

We are currently participating in GlobalGiving’s fundraising Challenge, raising 30,000 USD to support a 1-year, nationwide cardiac and diabetes outreach program, which began in the Summer of 2012.
